When Places Return in Dreams

Sometimes, years can pass without us thinking about a place, and then suddenly, we find ourselves there in a dream.

It might be an old home, a school we left long ago, or a street we have not walked down for years. When we wake up, one question often comes to mind: Why that place?

Places in our memory are not just walls, doors, and streets. Some of them are tied to a whole period of our lives. They may remind us of safety, fear, loss, happiness, or a version of ourselves that no longer exists.

So when an old place appears in a dream, it does not always mean that we miss the place itself.

Sometimes, we are simply going through a feeling today that reminds us of something we felt back then.

Someone might dream about their old school when starting a new job. It may have nothing to do with school. Perhaps they are feeling the same fear of being judged or failing that they once felt as a student.

That is why the same place can mean something completely different to two people.

An old house may feel warm and safe to one person, while it may bring back painful memories for another.

Perhaps the better question is not, “What does this place mean?”

Maybe it is:

“How did I feel when I was there?”

Sometimes, our dreams do not take us back to places we have left.

They take us back to feelings we left behind.
