When a Dream Slips Away the Moment You Wake

How many times have you woken up sure you’d just had an important dream, only to find you can’t remember a single piece of it? It feels like it vanished the second you opened your eyes. This isn’t some flaw in memory. It’s simply tied to which stage of sleep the dream happened in, since dreams closer to waking tend to stay with us longer than deeper ones.

Some of us spend a few minutes trying to catch even a fragment of that lost scene. We feel a real sense of loss when nothing comes back. That feeling can linger for hours, until the day pulls us in and we forget we were even searching in the first place.

There’s no need to worry about this. If God chose to let that scene fade, there’s likely a reason behind it, even if we can’t see it. Maybe holding onto it would have weighed on the heart for no real purpose. Maybe forgetting itself is a kind of mercy, sparing us from carrying something we only needed to pass through, not hold onto all day.

Staying still for a moment after waking can help. Don’t jump up or reach for your phone right away. Give yourself a moment of quiet before the noise of the day begins. But in the end, the dreams worth remembering tend to stay with us, no matter how easily everything else slips away.

Sometimes just telling yourself, while still half awake, that you had a dream, even without remembering it, is enough. It leaves a door open in your memory, one that dream might quietly walk back through later, when you least expect it.
