The Empty Bag

A man once dreamed that he was carrying a black bag everywhere he went.

He did not know what was inside it, but it felt very heavy. Whenever he opened it, however, the bag was completely empty.

The dream happened more than once, and eventually he began to wonder:

How can something empty feel so heavy?

Dreams do not always give us clear answers. Sometimes, they simply show us something we have not found the words for.

We do not only carry things we can see. We carry old memories, words we never said, guilt, disappointment, and fears from things that happened years ago.

Over time, we can carry these things for so long that we stop asking ourselves why they are still with us.

Perhaps the bag in this dream was only a dream. Or perhaps it offered a simple way of thinking about something deeper.

Maybe the weight was never inside the bag.

Sometimes, what hurts us is not the past itself, but the meaning we have given to it.

A person may still blame themselves for a decision they made years ago, even though they are no longer the same person. They may still fear losing something that has already been gone for a long time.

So perhaps the real question is not:

“What was inside the bag?”

But:

“What have I been carrying for years without knowing why?”

Some things do not need to be explained. Sometimes, we simply need to recognise when it is time to put them down.

And perhaps that is why the bag was empty.

Because the heaviest things we carry are not always things we can see.
